4th Annual - May 7, 2009

Tonight is the 4th annual Brooklyn Blogfest, and my first time as a panelist ever.  Strangely, I’m not feeling the least bit nervous about trying to form complete and coherent sentences about “Why I Blog” before a crowd of New York digerati.  As a photographer (and I’ve only recently felt comfortable calling myself a photographer), I’m typically the one behind the camera, focusing on someone else, so the thought being in front of all those eyeballs would typically give me butterflies, cold sweat, weak knees and not-so-fortitudinous intestines.

I was recently reminded by a junior high school (and new facebook) friend about my surprise, 10-second prance across the stage in a pink tutu during a whole school assembly.  And there were my roles in high school plays and musicals, my most memorable as Miles Gloriosus in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.  I’ve also played saxophone in various jazz and reggae bands, with some of my performances so incredibly terrible that I’m amazed I’ve not melted down my horn and sold it for scrap.   All those times had me on edge and anxious, second guessing why I’d agreed to potentially making a complete fool of myself before friends and family, but I’ve always made the leap from the wings onto the stage despite the voice in my head screaming: RUN!

I’m no psychoanalyst, but I’m sure there’s some clinical diagnosis to be made about my being a photographer, my generally shy nature, and my willingness to put myself out there (either literally or electronically) in big, bold, sometime disastrous, but always exhilarating, ways.

So, if you’re in the audience tonight, don’t be alarmed if you see me off in a corner, curled up in a ball, hugging my knees, sweating profusely, rocking back and forth, mumbling.  It only means that I am, in fact, scared shitless, having my typical pre-performance meltdown, and I’m just putting on my game face, getting ready for my 15 seconds of fame (or infamy).

more about “Leeia Music – Satisfaction“, posted with vodpod

Getting a break in the entertainment business is always tough, and definitely more so these days with the economy in the toilet and everyone cutting back on luxuries.  Putting food on the table, keeping a roof over one’s head, keeping clothes on one’s back, and getting to where one needs to go are those expenses at the top of everyone’s budget. There are often only a few dollars left in the kitty for any other necessities, let alone a “luxury” like entertainment.

Necessity, a mother once again, has given birth to a double-headed baby in the form of a dollar van line with on-board entertainment: Dollar Van Demos.  I’m not talking about DVD players in head rests like jetBlue, but real, live, performers looking for their break while giving thrifty riders something to help pass the time as they save on transportation costs.

My favorite performer so far is Leeia Music, shown in the video above.  And it seems that they operate in my hood, as shown at about the 1:20 mark in the video when they drop off passengers at Atlantic and Flatbush, site of the proposed Atlantic Yards project.

Thanks to Gothamist for the tip.
