WALK DON’T DESTROY BROOKLYN 5 – October 17th

The BIG WALK to Raise Funds for the Legal Full Court Press Against Atlantic Yards

This way well be the last “Walk Don’t Destroy Brooklyn” walkathon. The eminent domain oral arguments will be heard at the New York State Court of Appeals on October 14th. Forest City Ratner is doing its best to raise funds (such as partnering with a Russian oligarch) and get a shovel in the ground to before year-end to qualify for tax breaks due to expire on December 31, 2009.

IT’S NOW OR NEVER TO SUPPORT THE FIGHT AGAINST
ATLANTIC YARDS

From Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn‘s website:
Victory is in sight against the Atlantic Yards project. The next five months are absolutely crucial to bring all of our forces together for the big push of opposition against Ratner’s floundering mega-development plan.

For this year’s Walkathon, which depends upon your active participation and sponsor solicitation, we will be taking a grand tour touching on some of the neighborhoods that would be impacted by the project if it is built. And we’ll start from Brooklyn Borough Hall, the people’s Hall.

If you have not registered for the Walkathon on Saturday, October 17th, you can do so by clicking here. You can also form a team to compete against others to see who can raise the most contributions to the legal fight.

After you register, PLEASE send out your emails through the automated tool to friends, family and co-workers asking them to sponsor you with as generous a donation as possible. If they can give now, you may never ask them again!

And if you have already registered, remember to invite your friends, family and co-workers to sponsor you — just click the “Email Friends” in the left hand column on the Walk Don’t Destroy site.

Here are the details…

The walk will feature hundreds of walkers and start at Borough Hall and finish with a community party in Fort Greene’s Habana Outpost.

The walk route extends about 2.3 miles (our longest Walkathon yet, but still quite manageable).

1pm — 2pm : SIGN IN:
Visit our tables at Brooklyn Borough Hall to pick up your registration (or to register if you haven’t already done so).

2 pm – 4pm:

Your support and participation are more important than ever as we approach the completion of the sixth year in the fight against Atlantic Yards and for responsible, democratic development.
