Summer Streets on Vanderbilt Avenue

2009 Summer Streets on Vanderbilt Avenue

This past Sunday was the first of four Summer Streets events on Vanderbilt Avenue in Prospect Heights.  You can see more of my photos of the event here.

From The Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council web page for the event:

Every Sunday this June from noon to 5 PM, Vanderbilt Avenue between Dean Street and Park Place will be closed to cars and transformed into a temporary pedestrian plaza for people to play, stroll, ride bikes – or simply enjoy the summer day. There will be music, art and gardening, face painting, sun and trees, shopping, eating and relaxing, biking and performances, and people watching. Plus a few surprises.

Here’s your chance to read a book under a tree, impress your friend with your hula hoop skills, learn to skate board, or just stroll down the middle of the street eating an ice cream cone.

Summer Streets on Vanderbilt Avenue is a smaller version of the successful Summer Streets program that ran along Park Avenue in Manhattan last August and is part of NYC’s initiative to create a healthier, more livable and sustainable city. It is sponsored by PHNDC and the Vanderbilt Avenue Merchants District, in cooperation with the NYC Department of Transportation, and with support from Council Member Letitia James.
